Excessive And Hazardous Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Spouse, And Motivation For Beneficial Change

It took several years but Sarah finally made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking. She was weary from seeing Keith come home early in the morning from drinking instead of spending time with the family. She was also exhausted from the DUI Keith recently received. Furthermore she was worn-out from creating reasons for her spouse when he couldn't make it to his job due to his abusive drinking.

In a similar manner, she was anxious about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's excessive and abusive drinking. And lastly she was weary from the precarious financial predicament into which he had put his family due to his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior.

One day when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's excessive and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something positive to cut into the negative cycle of Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked online under "alcohol treatment" and found numerous treatment clinics that were all located less than fifteen miles away from where Keith and she lived.

When Sarah called each rehab clinic she introduced herself and said that her husband was involved in excessive and abusive drinking behavior. She also articulated that her husband had an excellent health insurance program at his place of employment and that outpatient or residential alcohol rehab would be covered if a physician in the company health plan authorized the rehab.

After listening to Sarah describe her husband's abusive drinking, the psychologist in a helpful but firm way explained to Sarah how she may have adding to her spouse's abusive and hazardous drinking through the years. How? Mainly by making excuses for him rather than letting him suffer the consequences of his excessive and abusive drinking behavior.

Stated somewhat more forcefully, the psychologist told Sarah that she may have been accidentally enabling Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. The therapist also stressed the fact that Sarah could not control her husband's behavior. With the support and guidance of the treatment team at the treatment facility, however, she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Keith's abusive drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the treatment clinic so that he could talk about his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior with a therapist.

The good news was that after Sarah explained this to her husband and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been quite troubled by his abusive drinking behavior and that he was quite pleased to hear that Sarah wanted to do something helpful about his abusive drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol treatment clinic.

While simply calling a rehab facility does not ensure that a person's abusive drinking behavior will stop or that a person will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is certainly an essential factor in the treatment process. And because Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting help for his abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably increased.
