CPSC Issues Caution To Parents Regarding Sling Newborn Carriers
As many of you have probably already heard, the CPSC has issued a notification to parents and how they manage their newborns in their baby sling. |A little over a week ago, the CPSC released a warning for parents to use caution while handling their newborns in baby slings.
The agency warned parents to "be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger than four months of age." It also urged parents of preemies, twins, babies in fragile health and those of low weights to use additional care and take up with their pediatricians about utilizing slings. "We know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies," said CPSC chair Inez Tenenbaum.
The CPSC is looking into at least 14 fatalities over the past 20 years associated with sling-style newborn carriers, including 3 fatalities in 2009. Babies younger than four months are the highest risk factor as 12 deaths involving baby slings over the past 20 years involve babies in this age group. Many of the babies who died in slings were either a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues.
Slings can pose 2 different types of suffocation hazards to newborns. In the first several months of life, babies have difficulty controlling their heads because their neck muscles are not yet sufficiently developed. The baby sling carrier fabric can press against an infant's nose and mouth, blocking the baby's breathing and rapidly suffocating a child within a minute or two. Also, keeping your child in a curled position is asking for trouble. This restricts the airway by bending the chin onto their chest and can limit the oxygen supply. The baby will not be able to cry for help and can slowly suffocate. The CPSC has recommended that parents and caregivers make certain the baby's face is not covered and can be seen at all times to the sling's wearer. In short, please be careful before using your baby sling and read the directions!
